Keeping your dog cool in the heat

Keeping your dog cool in the heat
8 July 2022 by Natalie Rodley-Haines

Keeping your dog cool in the heat is just as important as your baby.  With this in mind, we have also added a blog to help.  We know this UK weather isn’t normal to us.

Plan your walks

Unfortunately when we get a heatwave like this it is time to get up earlier (for those of us dog owners that don’t already walk at 6am).

We need to plan our walks so that the puppa’s are getting the cooler times of the day and not overheating.  Keep an eye on the weather app and walk them early in the morning and late at night.

Check the pavement

Before you take your dog out check the heat of the pavement.  If you can’t keep your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds before it gets hot then you shouldn’t be taking your dog out onto it.

Also, be aware that artificial grass can heat up really quickly and be just as bad for paws if they go onto it.

Ice cubes in water

Making sure your dog always has access to water is really important.  You can also put Ice-cubes in it to make sure that it stays cooler.
There are though times you shouldn’t allow a dog Ice so read this before making the decision – https://www.dogsforgood.org/good-advice/is-it-ok-to-give-a-dog-ice/

Paddling pool

If you have space put out a paddling pool in a shaded area of your garden for the dog to play in.  Put toys in there and make it playtime.  A really great idea if you’re having to cut their walk time down.

Keeping your dog cool

Wet towels

Have some towels ready to soak in cold water.  These can be draped over your dog to keep him/her cool.

It’s an easy one to do as well.
